DG’s Story: How football helped shape a brighter future

This is DG’s story, a 19-year-old from Croydon whose journey through recovery has been shaped by his love of the game, his determination to grow, and the encouragement he’s found through our weekly sessions.

DG, a 19-year-old from Croydon was referred to our Football for Health programme, which supports young patients from Bethlem Royal Hospital.

Football for Health is part of our work where we use the power of Palace to tackle health inequalities and encourage people of all ages to lead an active and healthy life. We offer 1-to-1 support through our community connectors, provide opportunities to take part in physical activity in a social environment and offer health education.

The session DG joined began in summer 2023, designed to support patients who have been sectioned under the Mental Health Act. It creates a pathway for them to take part in our weekly community football sessions once they are discharged, and also offers a positive use of leave time while still in recovery.

It was clear from DG’s first session that he was a talented footballer.

During his referral, DG shared that one of his goals was to manage his weight, stay fit to keep playing football, lift his mood and build a regular routine. Despite some challenges from the side effects of his medication, he stayed committed and turned up to most sessions.

DG’s determination didn’t go unnoticed. Our coaches saw a real change in him – not just in his football skills, but in how confidently he began to express himself through the game.

His care coordinator shared: “It has been lovely to see DG get involved with the project! He loves football and so having a space where he can do something he loves whilst meeting other service users who have had similar experiences to him has been really helpful and I think is definitely having a positive impact on his confidence and recovery”

Since joining Football for Health, DG hasn’t returned to hospital or needed support from crisis services, a clear sign of the difference the programme has made. With continued support, we’re confident he’ll keep going from strength to strength.
